Most liveable alien worlds ranked

Scientists have outlined which moons and planets are most likely to harbour extra-terrestrial life.

Among the most habitable alien worlds were Saturn’s moon Titan and the exoplanet Gliese 581g – thought to reside some 20.5 light-years away in the constellation Libra.

The international team devised two rating systems to assess the probability of hosting alien life.

They have published their results in the journal Astrobiology.

Newton vs. Leibniz; The Calculus Controversy

Like most discoveries, calculus was the culmination of centuries of work rather than an instant epiphany. Mathematicians all over the world contributed to its development, but the two most recognized discoverers of calculus are Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Although the credit is currently given to both men, there was a time when the debate over which of them truly deserved the recognition was both heated and widespread.

Stem cells from human embryos

One of the big aims in stem cell research has been to take DNA from adult into an egg cell to create a clone. Ever since the cloning of Dolly the sheep in 1996, researchers have been trying to recreate this experiment with other animals as well as humans. The results have been mixed over the years but in October a lab in the US published some results showing an extraction of reproducing stem cell from embryos, after injecting adult cells into egg cells  (Noggle, S. et al. Nature 478, 70-75 (2011)).  Continue reading

Single-molecule ‘electric car’ taken for test drive

Scientists have shown off what can be described as the world’s smallest electric car – made of a single, carefully designed molecule.

The molecule has four branches that act as wheels, rotating when a tiny metal tip applied a small current to them.

With 10 electric bursts, the car was made to move six billionths of a metre. Continue reading

Bionic contact lens ‘to project emails before eyes’

A new generation of contact lenses that project images in front of the eyes is a step closer after successful animal trials, say scientists.

The technology could allow wearers to read floating texts and emails or augment their sight with computer-generated images, Terminator-syle.
